Bridge for Beginners: A Four-Week Plan From Zero to Your First Game

Bridge has a reputation for being hard to learn. It is not hard so much as large. The trick is to learn it in the right order and to play hands from the very first day rather than reading about them. This plan takes about an hour a day for four weeks. By the end you will be able to sit down in a beginner-friendly duplicate game and hold your own.

Week one: the mechanics and trick taking#

Learn how a trick works, what following suit means, and how trumps beat everything else. Read How to Play Bridge and Bridge Rules for Beginners. Then play. Many teachers start beginners with minibridge, a version where there is no auction: the side with more points declares, and you practise only the play. If you have a table with robots, deal a hand, look at all four hands, and try to work out how many tricks each side can take before you play it.

• Practice: ten hands a day in Shark Bridge Game, robots on the easiest level, undo allowed.
• Goal: by the end of the week you follow suit without thinking and you can count how many trumps are still out.

Week two: counting points and opening the bidding#

Now the auction. Learn high card points, what a balanced hand is, and the standard opening bids: one of a suit with 12 or more points, 1 notrump with 15 to 17 and a balanced hand, 2 clubs as the strong opening, and weak twos. Read Bridge Bidding Basics and the first half of How to Evaluate a Bridge Hand. Every time you pick up a hand this week, say your point count out loud before you look at the robot's bid.

• Practice: deal hands and decide only the opening bid, then check what the robot in your seat would have opened. The Shark robots play a standard system with a published convention card.
• Goal: you open the right bid on 9 hands out of 10.

Week three: responding, and playing the hand#

Two things this week. First, the responses: when to raise partner, when to bid a new suit, when to bid notrump, and how many points you need for game. Second, the three basic play techniques: drawing trumps, setting up a long suit and taking a finesse. Read the second half of Bridge Bidding Basics and skim Bridge Conventions Explained so Stayman and transfers are not a surprise when a partner uses them.

• Practice: full hands, auction and play, still against robots. After each hand, check how the robots played it and compare with your line.
• Goal: you make your contract more often than not when you have the points for it.

Week four: duplicate procedure and your first game#

Read What Is Duplicate Bridge so boards, matchpoints and directors make sense. Then play a scored robot game. Insta-Game on Online Bridge Club is a 12 board game with feedback after each board, and it is sanctioned by the ACBL, so a good result earns your first Masterpoints. Play two or three during the week. Then find a human game: a beginner-friendly club session, or a Play & Learn game where a teacher reviews the hands after each round.

• Practice: one scored game every other day.
• Goal: finish one Insta-Game above 40 percent, and sit down at one table with real people.

After the first month#

You will know by now whether you want lessons. If you would rather keep learning by playing, keep the habit going: a few hands a day against the robots and one scored game a week. Most players who quit do so in month two, when the novelty fades and the results have not yet improved. Push through that month.
